Discovery is the name of the game at The Local Gin Co., which takes a hyper-local approach to its monthly gin subscription club. Choose from one of eight English regions (or let Local Gin Co. pick for you), and you’ll be sent a bottle of small-batch gin made in that area. There’s also a box for pink gin lovers, an online gin shop (helpfully categorised by region, flavour profile and garnish) and regular events. Ordering is straightforward, with options to receive a box every one, two or three months. Each box is £40 and you can cancel anytime – we also like that you can easily switch regions so you can try gins from across the country.

Each box comes with a full-sized bottle of gin, garnishes and British tonic water, plus tasting and distiller notes. The packaging is quite functional, but more importantly is recyclable and completely plastic-free. We chose the South West as our region and received a bottle of Thunderflower Devon Dry Gin. Made in Teignmouth, it had a fragrant earthiness with herbaceous and spice notes, and came with dried orange slices and three bottles of Jeffrey’s tonic syrup – intensely flavoured concentrates that you dilute with water.

This is a great concept for a subscription. Today’s gin market is saturated with hundreds of brands and it can be overwhelming to choose new bottles to try. Local Gin Co. is a great way to unearth lesser-known regional gins that you might not come across in the supermarkets, and it would particularly suit those looking to support smaller producers.
